Thyroid

It shows up every month. Your energy bill. You know about what to expect in terms of how much you’ll pay but what happens when you receive a bill for 4 times what you normally pay?? Hopefully you look into it right away! That’s wasted money and energy!

Think of your thyroid as your body’s energy company. Alongside the hypothalamus and pituitary gland you have an energy company that regulates such things as breathing, heart rate, body weight, muscle strength and more. When it isn’t working properly you can experience side effects that can lead to you feeling “not like yourself” or “off”.

During your free screening we look for triggers to make you feel such symptoms. Specific to your thyroid the screening at Epoch Health looks at your levels of TSH, the thyroid-stimulating hormone. TSH is released from the pituitary gland to produce hormones essential to regulating the speed at which metabolism works such as your heart rate and digestion of food.

HYPOTHROIDISM

When there is a deficiency of the thyroid hormone in your body it causes a hormonal imbalance that can interfere with many metabolic reactions in your body.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are often slow to appear and are often mistaken as normal signs of aging. Such symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Hair Loss
  • Dry Skin
  • Weight gain
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Constipation
  • Cold Intolerance
  • Depression
  • Worsened memory

HYPERTHYROIDISM

An overly high thyroid level in men indicates an overactive thyroid gland. When the body produces an excessive amount of the thyroid hormone it causes a dramatic increase in the body’s metabolic rate known as hyperthyroidism.

  • Symptoms may include:
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Breathlessness
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Anxiety
  • Osteoporosis (in severe cases)
  • Hair Loss
  • Insomnia
  • Weight Loss
  • Fatigue
  • Increased Bowel Movements
