Diabetes is a condition that can and will affect nearly every organ in the body including, but not limited to: heart and kidney function, vascular flow including erectile dysfunction and condition.
Did you know that approximately 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year and it’s the 7th leading cause of death in America? At Epoch Health we utilize a combination of labs including blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C in order to diagnose diabetes as well as pre-diabetes.
Diabetes is almost always linked to a “western diet” which is high in fat and carbohydrates, sedentary lifestyles and/or family history. At Epoch we approach the problem first by early detection, then utilizing simple lifestyle modifications that can have dramatic impacts on the patient’s overall health. As a last resort, we may utilize first line pharmaceuticals in order to help break the cycle and get the patient’s blood sugar under control.
In your free screening we look at non-fasting blood glucose levels; an elevated non-fasting level will trigger more testing. Frequently a hemoglobin A1C is ordered which gives an estimate of the average blood sugar over the last 3 months. An elevated A1C is diagnostic of diabetes or glucose intolerance depending on the level. Associated with diabetes come the increased risk of heart attack and stroke, limb amputation, erectile dysfunction, and kidney failure. Ideally we can prevent diabetes before it ever manifests through close monitoring and encouraging the lifestyle modifications mentioned above.
